50 Cent’s label, Interscope Records, announced Friday (November 14) that the rapper’s upcoming fourth album, Before I Self Destruct, has been pushed back to an unspecified date in “early 2009.”
According to the label, although 50 has been rushing to get his album finished for a December release, it’s yet to be complete. With the deadline to secure advertising and retail placement for the album imminent, he decided to move to a date in early 2009.
However, the G-Unit boss will be release his forthcoming album with a full-length original movie in the form of a DVD that will accompany Before I Self Destruct with the same title.
The 90-minute film is a coming of age story about an inner city youth raised by a hardworking single mother. When the main character’s dream of becoming a basketball player fails to materialize, he finds himself employed in a supermarket. After his mother is tragically gunned down, Clarence (played by Fiddy) is consumed by revenge and takes up a life of crime in order to support his younger brother.
“Times are hard,” said 50 Cent. “Everyone is trying to make the most of what they have. I want to give my fans something extra for their hard earned dollars. They’ll get a free bonus when they pick up the album.”
The CD/DVD package isn’t all, though. 50 Cent is also offering, for a limited time, a second DVD titled “Two Turntables And A Microphone: The Life And Death Of Jam Master Jay,” a documentary about 50 Cent’s late mentor and friend. The documentary has been five years in the making by Jay’s cousin, Phonz. After Fiddy filmed an interview for the upcoming DVD, he jumped aboard to serve as executive producer. But, as mentioned, the rapper was close to Jay early in his career, so his involvement is more than a business decision.
“He was somebody who impacted my career — you can say in the biggest way,” 50 explained to MTV last month. ” ‘Cause in my career, I was just in the infant stages, developing my song structure around Jay.”
According to Interscope, 50’s new album is darker and harder than last year’s effort Curtis. It will feature production and guest appearances by Dr. Dre and Eminem, and is led by the club-friendly first single, “Get Up,” produced by Scott Storch.
