'Gully God' returns to NY

After being unable to travel to the United States for months, dancehall artiste Mavado will give his fans in the US a full performance at an official return show on October 25.

‘Return of the Gully God’

Mavado, real name David Constantine Brooks, will perform at his Return of the Gully God show, which will be held at Club Amazura in Queens, New York.

It will be hosted by Jabba and will feature selectors such as Foota Hype, Boom Boom, DJ Oneson, Massive B and Troopa Chaloopa. There will also be performances from Mavado’s ‘so-special friends’.

Full performance

His manager, Julian Jones-Griffith, said his many fans deserve a full performance from him, hence, Mavado and his management team decided to undertake this venture.

“He performed at Irie Jamboree (August 31) but this is his first up-close-and-personal gig. There is a great demand for him in New York and the people love him,” Jones-Griffith told THE STAR. “He couldn’t do a full performance at Irie Jamboree so he can sing out his entire catalogue there.”

In addition, Jones-Griffith said, Mavado is a hot commodity in New York as his songs So Special and the Jay Z remix of On The Rock are being rotated heavily on New York’s Hot 97.

Denied entry

In March, Mavado’s travel documents were seized after he was charged with illegal possession of firearm and shooting with intent. The charges were later dropped. The documents were returned but he was again denied entry into the United States in April.

After his US visa was renewed in August, Mavado performed briefly alongside Wyclef Jean and later by himself at Irie Jamboree.

While there are many shows on Mavado’s schedule, Jones-Griffith said Mavado is also doing some recording. While in New York in early September, he recorded a Kanye West-produced song with Jay Z for Jay Z’s last Def Jam album called Blueprint.

Jones-Griffith said 50 Cent also sent a beat on which he wants Mavado to record a song.

And Mavado’s upcoming album, Mr. Brooks: A Better Tomorrow, will be released by the end of the year.
