KINGSTON, JAMAICA — After a commanding performance at this year’s staging of Sting, dancehall artiste KipRich is on to making career plans for the new year.
“There are more tracks and videos to come. I was abroad for most of the year and came back in summer and a mad ting me deh pon without apology,” he said.
Sting which took place last week Sunday night at Jamworld, St. Catherine, saw a drastic decline in patrons present, despite that KipRich says he alongside other artistes gave stellar performances.
KipRich entered the stage some minutes after 7 a.m. to his song Mi Nuh Fraid (Ah No Man) in a specially-designed Romeich Wear military outfit. The venue went wild with cheers. He wasted no time and soon tackled the controversy surrounding the word “Oh!”
“Beenie say him get the style from him granny, but it look like Kartel have the same granny too,” to which the crowd again erupted. He continued, “Di lass set a artiste who try fi diss me, me see dem dung town a sell and try corel me.”
He soon after called out former Gaza Empire member, Black Ryno, who immediately launched into his single, Mi Lef (Go Lick Yuh Pickney) which the crowd enjoyed. Beenie Man and Assassin soon joined the two artistes on stage to close the night’s proceedings.
KipRich says, “The crowd enjoyed themselves; there wasn’t a clash there but the liked the whole throwing words vibe. I’m an entertainer and I always use stage shows to my benefit, because no matter what, stage-shows will always be the place where fans can see what you are capable of, and not come give dem a performance an mek it feel like a radio dem stand up a listen wid pure ‘wheel’ and ‘pull up’/ So it was still a good vibe.”
Last year the three members of the Monster Empire learnt first hand about KipRich’s clash skills. Following riveting performances Sting and Follow Di Arrow, KipRich went on to sign a US recording contract which had him recording in the US for months on end, followed by shows across the states and Africa.
“Things weren’t going how I wanted, so I was released from that US deal and since I’ve been back, it’s the same ‘nuh behaviour’ KipRich who does social commentary in his lyrics, whether people might offended or not. A jus my ting dat, fi talk di tings dem in a honest way,” he said. The Jook Gal, Can’t Get Brown, Telephone Ting, Baby Mama Drama artiste plans to release a video for his Over Mi Shoulder track in a few weeks.
