A major earthquake in Japan early Friday sent people fleeing out of buildings in the capital of Tokyo and triggered tsunami warnings. Cars toppled off bridges and fell into waters underneath.

The 8.8-magnitude quake was 373 kilometers (231 miles) from Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said. It triggered a tsunami warning for various countries, including Japan and Russia, the National Weather Service said.

“Based on all available data a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter,” forecasters said. “An investigation is under way to determine if there is a tsunami threat to Hawaii.”
