As she waits for her sophomore album, ‘Love A Dub’, to drop, reggae songstress Alaine is not sitting around twiddling her thumbs. She has been writing up a storm.
“I have been writing ferociously,” she said, declining, however, to reveal any details about her latest efforts. “I am excited about all the new stuff I am writing.”
Some of that new stuff is on the eagerly awaited album that was initially titled ‘Never Done’but is now to be called Love A Dub.
The album was due out in March but that has been delayed, and now she is keeping her fingers crossed that it will be out later this year.
“We signed a contract with VP (Records) to do the distribution for the album and now it’s dependent on how fast their machinery works, so hopefully this year,” she said laughing heartily.
Several singles from the album – Forever More with Tarrus Riley, the title track, Love A Dub with Buju Banton, and Without You – are out and getting favourable reviews, but the end product means a lot more than the frequent airplay and rave reviews to the former, banker, turned, reggae star.
“You hear people say this is my best work, it really is. I compared it to my last album, Sacrifice, song for song, and I am so much happier with all of these songs,” she said. “Even though all of those other songs are my babies as well, I just think that this album shows a lot more of my evolution. I am growing and becoming a better writer, a better producer. So that’s awesome to branch off into that aspect of the music.”
creating music
The evolution has allowed her to spread her wings and grow as an artiste, she said, revealing that on her last album several producers provided the rhythms and she wrote songs for them, but on Love A Dub, Don Corleone, who produced the album, allowed her to do so much more.
“Now I am creating music as well as writing, conceptualising. It feels more like it’s all me. It feels more like I can truly express myself and it’s exciting,” she beamed. “And every day I wake up and can’t wait to start something new because now everything has a little bit of me in it so it feels more mine.”
But she is not about to sit idly by and wait for the album to come out. She has tours on the immediate horizon that she said she is eagerly anticipating.
“We’re getting ready to go for a month to Japan. We have several shows over there. I’ve been there twice before, performed in one of the biggest clubs in Tokyo, sold out the club to thousands of Japanese people all singing in English. Incredible,” she said, adding that she is still to get used to sushi. “It’s funny because I tell people that I go to Japan and eat fried chicken.”
She also has upcoming dates in Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana and Massachusetts, among others in the next couple of months.
