Roy Hibbert is wishing he took note of the nuances between “pause” and “no homo” right about now. The Indiana Pacer’s use of the latter during a post-game press conference has led to him receiving a $75,000 fine by the NBA.

Hibbert’s flagrant comment came after the Pacers’ Saturday (June 1) night 91-77 defeat of the Miami Heat in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals. The Georgetown University alum made the remark when discussing defense and teammate Paul George.

“I really felt that I let Paul down in terms of having his back when LeBron was scoring in the post or getting to the paint, because they stretched me out so much, no homo.”

To make matters worse for him, the NBA All-Star chuckled after making the statement. He quickly apologized the next day.

“I am apologizing for insensitive remarks made during the post-game press conference after our victory over Miami Saturday night,” Hibbert said in a statement via the Indiana Pacers. “They were disrespectful and offensive and not a reflection of my personal views. I used a slang term that is not appropriate in any setting, private or public, and the language I used definitely has no place in a public forum, especially over live television. I apologize to those who I have offended, to our fans and to the Pacers’ organization. I sincerely have deep regret over my choice of words last night.”

The NBA felt Hibbert was contrite, but nevertheless fined him the hefty sum.

“While Roy has issued an apology, which is no doubt sincere, a fine is necessary to reinforce that such offensive comments will not be tolerated by the NBA,” said NBA Commissioner David Stern in a statement.
