Artistes Minister Powerfully at Fun in the Son

They included Kevin Downswell, Judith Gayle, Prodigal Son, Carlene Davis, Papa San, and the United States-born Tye Tribbett (the headline act).

The entertainers made the ninth staging of the gospel extravaganza at the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies Bowl something to remember.

Ainsworth Morris, attending his third Fun in the Son, summed up Tribbet’s performance in a word – “Incredible”. “Tye Tribbett gave an awesome ministry,” said Morris, about the entertainer who closed the show.

Morris was not kidding when he described Tribett’s ministry.

Passionate Performance

The young minister and business entrepreneur promised earlier in an interview that his performance would be passionate. And so it was.

Before Tribbett’s entrance, Trey Cowan, one of the MCs (the other was Nadine Blair) asked loudly, “Jamaica, are you ready?” The mass collectively replied, “Yes!”

And with that, like a man on a mission Tribbett bounced on to the stage and began his musical lecture.

First, a medley, including I Love Jesus, Bless the Lord, and He Has Done Great Things. Then he was on to Lord You are Worthy, followed by a passionate delivery of I Just Can’t Make it Without You.

His songs were interspersed with spoken words. “When you read the Bible you are not just reading history, but what kind of life you are to live.” The young minister with long, locked hair explained lessons that can be learned from David, John the Baptist, and Jesus. And in one of his most profound remarks, he said, “Rejection is redirection of spirit of endurance.”

Later, when he informed the crowd that his act was over there were calls for Take Over (the title of one of his songs).

Teasingly, he replied, “This is only for the people who are victorious in the house,” showing favour to some who had requested the singing of Victory.

He fulfilled both requests and concluded his magnificent praise and worship with a rock-band style ending.

Judith Gayle was also energetic.

She asked for a wave offering from the mega-size church and had them doing the matrix during her performance of Lift Up Your Hand. Prodigal, who has not performed at Fun in the Son for three years, was back with Don’t Give Up On Jesus and his popular Ketch a Fya.

And Papa San was fiery, reeling off hit after hit to the delight of everyone.

Carlene Davis was her usual brilliant self with her musical ministry.

Agnus Dei, along with dancers, thrilled the crowd with Healing Rain and This Island along with Need Jesus, another crowd favourite.

When the musical ministry concluded another day of Fun in the Son, patrons gave the event their thumbs up.

Duraine Walker said it best: “I believe it touches the lives of young people. It gets them to come together because the artistes draw them, and souls are saved.”

While it is not known how many souls were saved, it is safe to say that all were truly blessed through prayers, the spoken word, and song.
