Liberty Hall shared the evening with the Digicel Foundation and members of the media as they hosted a wine and cheese evening and media tour at its 76 King Street location.
And being International Museum Day, the Digicel Foundation thought it appropriate to donate a much needed instrument to Liberty Hall.
The museum now owns a state-of-the-art, free standing and airtight museum case, built by Helmut Guenschel in Baltimore, the only one of its kind in Jamaica and the Caribbean to date.
It is to be used to preserve several artefacts of national hero, Marcus Garvey.
Executive director of the Digicel Foundation, Major General Robert Neish, said it was an honour for him to be present to represent the Digicel Foundation, and that the foundation remains committed to preserving pieces of Jamaican culture, heritage and legacy.
Olivia Grange, minister of youth, sports and culture, seemed very proud of being involved in the affair.
She greeted those present with the words of Garvey saying, “Be as proud of your race today as our fathers were in days of yore. We have beautiful history, and we shall create another in the future that will astonish the world.”

She continued, “I greet you today with the words of our national hero, the Right Excellent Marcus Mosiah Garvey, who has been such an inspiration to the people of Jamaica and the people of the world. It is good, therefore, that a people proud of our beautiful history that we can gather here together in what is almost sacred ground to reflect on and recapture moments of that history that have been linked to the word and worth of Marcus Garvey.”
Donna Hall, director-curator at Liberty Hall was also elated.
“As we celebrate International Museum Day, we reinforce the importance of telling our own story from our perspective. The Marcus Mosiah Garvey Multimedia Museum is an important example of the future of Jamaica’s museums and we salute Digicel for its support of this initiative. This well needed display case is very important to us at Liberty Hall, as it means we can now house and preserve the artefacts and writings of the late Marcus Mosiah Garvey for this generation, the next generation and generations to come – thank you Digicel Foundation.”
Founded in 1923, Liberty Hall’s primary mission is to inform and educate the public about the works of Garvey. It is the only full multimedia museum in the Caribbean dedicated to the national hero.
