gta 5 trailerThe minute and a half long spot reveals that the franchise will be leaving Liberty City for sunnier skies, and returning to San Andreas. The last time the series was there was in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for the PS2, and many regard that title as the best in the series, though that’s up for debate.

Judging by the trailer, the same level of detail that was brought to Liberty City will be carried over to the west coast. No telling if the map will be as sprawling as it was in the last title, as that would take significantly more processing power this time around.

A few brief moments in the trailer point to the recession as being a focal point of the game, as a foreclosure notice is hammered into a lawn, and a homeless man begs for change. The US dollar inspired “V” as the “five” in the title points in that direction as well.

What detail remains unknown after the trailer is who exactly the new hero will be of the game. A voiceover talks about a criminal with a family moving there in order to retire, but things naturally don’t go according to plan. Might we see the return of a past hero in the series, either the mute protagonist from GTA III, or maybe Tommy Vercetti from Vice City? Or is this an entirely new character altogether?

If I knew Ray Liotta’s voice better, I could ID it to say that yes, Tommy Vercetti is back, but I can’t get confirmation on that quite yet, though it is looking likely. His character ended up rich and happy(ish) at the end of Vice City, and it would make sense that he could be an older lead with kids now in this new game, set some 20-25 years later.

More details about Grand Theft Auto 5 will probably be revealed soon, and stay tuned for any more info we might learn today.
