India Arie to attend EME Awards

International singer India Arie will be making an appearance at the Excellence In Music and Entertainment (EME) Awards in February.

On Friday, the show’s organiser Richard ‘Richie B’ Burgess confirmed that the singer will be attending the event, which will be held in February at the gardens of the Jamaica Pegasus hotel. He said that the singer will be accepting her award for International Friend of Reggae.

The other awardee in the category will be Melanie Fiona, a Canadian Rhythm & Blues singer/songwriter.

And, with Gramps Morgan, India Arie, who has been nominated for three Grammy Awards this year, will perform their song called Therapy.

“It has always been my dream to get one of our honourees at the show. It’s almost like a dream come true. It goes to show how much respect some of the international superstars have for Jamaica and its culture,”

Burgess told THE STAR, while noting that Gramps Morgan played a pivotal role in getting India Arie here.

“For us to have an honouree in the house, it would be a big step in the right direction, as we try to make the event evolve, grow and gain respect.”

But this is the first time that an honouree will be at the show. In 2008, Akon, who was honoured, sent his selector to collect the award. Last year, there were video clips of John Legend, Missy Elliot, Estelle and Jasmine Sullivan thanking the EMEs for the award.

Meanwhile, Jamaica-born US NFL player Morlon Greenwood will also make his debut performance, under the stage name Ultimate.
