Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Has Been Captured (Again)

Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, a.k.a. the guy who escaped maximum security on two separate but equally baffling occasions, has reportedly been re-captured by local authorities. Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto confirmed the news on Friday afternoon, Reuters initially reported. “Mission accomplished,” the president tweeted. “We have him. Joaquín Guzmán Loera has been arrested.”

The news comes after months of speculation regarding how, exactly, someone might escape a maximum security prison without being detected. A sophisticated underground tunnel, a brief helicopter ride, and guards reportedly very preoccupied with intense games of solitaire were promptly revealed as potentially key ingredients in El Chapo’s most recent escape.

Since escaping from one of the country’s most secure prison facilities in July of last year, the infamous drug lord has endured a series of close calls with local authorities. One such incident, involving a tracked pet monkey belonging to one of El Chapo’s daughters, reportedly resulted in minor injuries.

Sources tell the Associated Press that El Chapo was arrested on Friday after an apparent “shootout” with Mexican marines in the Los Mochis area of Sinaloa, with five suspects reportedly killed and six others detained. One marine was injured during the exchange of gunfire but is not believed to be in serious condition. A number of items, including a grenade launcher and two armored vehicles, were seized by local authorities.
