For whatever reason, hip-hop newcomers Wale and Kid Cudi just don’t like each other. Cudi even opened up about his problems with the DC rapper in a recent cover story for Complex, explaining that he took offense to a line Wale spit on a freestyle called “Thank You.”
On the track, he referenced Cudi’s infamous fan assault.
Cudi, who hails from Cleveland, called the jab “wack,” and said it was “a simple-ass rhyme by a simple-ass rapper.”
Wale eventually responded, via an interview on DJ Drama’s Gangsta Grillz Radio, saying the bar in the aforementioned freestyle was not a diss … further adding that there’s something more behind Cudi’s hatred toward him, but he wasn’t sure what.
However, how the tension started was unknown.
But, in a recently published Complex.com outtakes post for Cudi’s cover story, the rapper delved deeper into his fallout with Cudi. In it, he says Wale displays a lot of negative energy which he would rather not be around.
“I really don’t understand what’s up with this guy, but he’s just somebody I don’t click with anymore,” he said in the mag’s interview. “I started making changes in my life and started to realize positive energy around me, and he never really had a good energy. I never felt like he wanted to see me prosper, it was just one of those n****s that was envious rather than happy for a n****. I could be reading it wrong, but I’m not making beef and rearranging my life. It’s pretty obvious he feels some type of way about it.”
Cudi later adds that any type of resolution with Wale is also out of the question: “I’m not into peer mediation and working things out, I’m just trying to provide for my daughter and my family and making music for my fans. I vibe with certain people and some people I don’t.”
The pair both appeared in GQ’s “Men of the Year” issue last year, alongside Drake in a pictorial. While things looked to be ok at the time, Cudi tells Complex that he was appalled by Wale’s behavior during the shoot, calling him a “diva.”
“The whole time me and him and Drake were doing the GQ shoot, Wale was bitching and being aggravated that clothes weren’t in his size, just really not cooperating and being difficult, and just being a diva,” explained Cudi. “The photographer was like, ‘Wale, c’mon, smile a bit’ and he was like, ‘Man, I don’t smile, let these other guys smile.’ I was like, what kind of sh** is that? In my head I’m thinking, ‘Man, this is GQ. If these n****s want you to smile, smile.’ We just got picked for ‘Men of the Year,’ that sh** is awesome. It’s wack to be on that sh** when you’re at a photo shoot, he shouldn’t be getting all riled up.
“There was tension throughout the whole shoot,” he continued. “Me and Drake have a rapport, we’re cool. We were automatically hitting it off, and kicking it, and Wale was just not trying to be in the situation. He was trying to be too cool. He was acting like he’s too good for the situation, and that’s how he always is. He always acts like he’s bigger than what he is, and I don’t f*** with that at all.”
At the present moment, it just doesn’t look like these two see eye to eye. A Cudi and Wale collabo seems far from a reality anytime in the future, even though they’ve performed and working together in the past.
