Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III Is 2008's Best-Selling Album In SoundScan's Year-End Report

The official numbers for music sales were released by Nielsen SoundScan New Year’s Eve, and as many already know, Lil Wayne was on top.

With just over 2.8 million copies sold of his Tha Carter III album, Lil Wayne secured the top selling album of 2008, while later down the line at #8 is T.I.’s Paper Trail with 1.5 million, and Beyonce’s I Am … Sasha Fierce at #10 with 1.4 million.

As far as digital album sales, Weezy landed at #4 with 267,000, while Kanye West’s 808s and Heartbreak landed at #8 with 183,000 digital albums sold in 08.

Digital singles are a different story. UK singer Leona Lewis topped the list with “Bleeding Love,” selling over 3.4 million units, while Lil Wayne’s “Lollipop” was right behind her with 3.1 million. Others within the top 10 included Flo Rida’s “Low” at #3 with 2.9 million, Rihanna’s “Disturbia” at #6 with 2.7 million, T.I.’s “Whatever You Like” at #7 with 2.6 million, and Jordin Sparks’ duet with Chris Brown “No Air” at #9 with just over 2.6 million.

Overall, music sales for 2008 (including albums, singles, music video, and digital tracks) were up 10.5% with just over 1.5 billion sales, from 2007’s numbers of 1.3 billion.

However, albums sales alone were down 14% with 428 million sold, from 500 million the year before.

Digital sales were up though. Digital tracks hit 1 billion this year, up 27% from 2007, while digital albums hit 65 million, up 32% from 2007’s 50 million number.

All the numbers were tracked by the Nielsen Company, via their SoundScan system.
