Stacious to star in movie about AIDS

Dancehall ‘gangstress’ Stacious is taking her considerable skills to the big screen. That’s right. Stacious, born Stacy Scarlett, auditioned for and won a major role in a short film about AIDS awareness.

The film was scheduled to start filming on location in Matthews Lane and Tivoli Gardens and other inner city communities, yesterday.

Educational film

While unable to reveal much about the film, Stacious confirmed that it is about AIDS awareness and might be released sometime later this year to coincide with World AIDS Day.

“It’s a short movie to educate and remind people about the dangers of AIDS,” she said.

The film is being directed by Ras Kassa, known mainly for his revolutionary directing of dancehall videos.

The news might come as a surprise to many, but Stacious is only fulfilling one of her long-time desires – acting.

“Actually, acting was my first love,” she says, revealing that while in school she often won prizes for drama.

Call me scarlett

She said she walked into the audition and introduced herself as Stacy Scarlett, after which she went through the audition process.

“A week later they called and said I got the part,” she said, adding that she was told that they stopped auditioning for the part after that.

Stacious says she would consider other acting roles in the future now that she has been re-infected by the acting bug.

“I’ve gotten to love them both (dancehall and acting) equally,” she said.

Just don’t expect to see her on stage in local plays. She says while she loves acting, stage acting here in Jamaica tends to be too dramatic and she prefers the more ‘laid back’ natural flow of movies.
