Wayne Wonder receives Award of Excellence

GRAMMY-nominated reggae singer, Wayne Wonder, winner of the MOBO Award (2003) and three BMI Urban Awards, has added to his cache having received an Award of Excellence from the organisers of Caribfest in Barbados.

According to Wayne Wonder’s manager, an invitation had been extended to the singer to perform at the function but they were given absolutely no indication that he was there to receive an award.

“I was delighted … of course. It’s always a pleasure and an honour to be recognised for your hard work. But surpassing the pleasure was surprise. The organisers didn’t even hint that we were even being considered for any kind of award,” Wayne stated.

Wayne Wonder and songbird, Tessanne Chin, were the recipients from Jamaica.

Four of the Caribbean’s most outstanding artistes were paid posthumous tributes in dance — reggae icon Bob Marley of Jamaica; ska great Jackie Opel of Barbados; legendary calypso singer Lord Kitchener of Trinidad and Cuba’s salsa singer, Celia Cruz .

Staged by Timeless Barbados, this was the first of what promises to be an annual event to honour artistes from across the region. Representing the Caribbean were Wayne Wonder, Tesanne Chin, Rosemary Phillips, Sabrina Estwick, Timeka Marshall, Christal Cane, Jaydene, Peter Ram, Edwin, Skinny Fabulous, Alison Hinds, Kassav, and Ria Borman.

Those chosen to receive the first ever Caribfest Awards were: Wayne Wonder and Tessanne Chin – Award of Excellence; Alison Hinds and Square One, Kassav and Edwin and Krosfyah – Lifetime Achievement Award.

Hosts of the evening were internationally renowned American actor and actress, Morris Chestnut and Vivica A Fox.
