Persons who had only communicated through twitter.com or read each other’s blogs online got the chance to interact in person and cheer for their favourite blogs last Sunday night. Hosted by Donna Lee Curtis and Hype TV’s Coco, the event kicked off with a performance from singer Natel, who did Miles Away and other songs.
Fourteen winners in the various categories, which consisted of five nominees each, were then announced.
Each received a trophy and a BlackBerry, courtesy of LIME.
Sean Bennett, one of the nominees, gave a moving performance of the monologue Knock Knock, and the night ended with a fashion show displaying items from HOD.
Blog Awards creator Corve DaCosta was pleased with the first staging of the event, as he told The Gleaner, “It’s great! In an environment where people don’t always get to say what they really feel or have the chance to give their opinion on social, political, cultural, artistic and other matters, why not have your own platform to discuss the issues that concern you?
“Imagine having your own newspaper or magazine, a vehicle of expression that was yours entirely to edit and develop as you saw fit. That is what blogging is all about. Blogs allow you to have a voice and a connection to the world. If you’re a group, it could be your way to get your message out to the masses.
People are sometimes a bit cynical about blogging but I believe awards like this recognise the good work that’s in the Jamaican blogosphere, and it shows how vibrant we are.”
