Cold loss for Ice's family, friends

It was a shocked and dismayed entertainment fraternity that received the news of dancer Ice’s death early yesterday morning. Ice was gunned down along Newark Avenue in St Andrew.

Born David Alexander Smith, the dancer was a veteranin the business known as noted member of the late Bogle’s Black Roses crew. Ice skyrocketed to super stardom this year with his dance ‘gully creepa’, which received fame worldwide after world record holder Usain Bolt celebrated his wins with during the Beijing Olympics.

For many in the dancing world, Ice’s death is a cold reminder of what happened to Jamaica’s lead dancer Bogle in January of 2005 when he was gunned down at a service station along Constant Spring Road. For fellow dancer Keiva the Diva, the death of Ice is a huge loss to the entertainment community.

According to Keiva she has known Ice for the last 10 years, telling THE STAR, “I saw him last night (Thursday night) and we were even dancing together. I’m mad, shocked, frightened, is Christmas and just a couple of days left for the new year, next month is Bogle’s memorial, one top dancer gone and another one now.”

She continued, “he was a happy energetic person. This is a loss this is one of those dancers who made all Usain Bolt gully creep in the Olympics, who make dancing large.”

overcome with grief

Closer to home when THE STAR visited the dancer’s home on Zinnia Avenue in St Andrew, his sisters were obviously overcome with grief. They had to put out an extra effort as they spoke of their last moments with their beloved brother.

“Wi have Christmas dinner yesterday and di whole a wi si dung a di table when wi done cause everybody did full… Him seh thank yu sis likkle before him look some clothes fi put on, a me dress him to eno,” Pinky, one of his sisters recalled.

“Mi not even know a when him left di yaad cause mi go a my bed early after wi done eat Christmas dinner,” another sister of Ice said.

Pinky also remarked “Mi naw bawl, mi done bawl… If a one ting mi did know bout my bredda is dat him neva fraid fi dead, but mi know him neva expect it, is a yute weh pray everyday,” while pointing to a Bible which she said Ice read everyday.

While on the Black Roses corner in Arnett Gardens, St Andrew, dancer and long-time friend of Ice, Boysie could only use hand gestures to THE STAR when asked how he felt.

For about three minutes, Boysie only stared with a look of disbelief on his face before making one final hand gesture and walking away.
